About the Berkley Braid Knot

The Berkley Braid Knot was developed by Berkley specifically to address braided line's tendency to slip through standard terminal knots. The slick, low-stretch surface of braid makes most mono-designed knots fail — the Berkley Braid Knot's multiple-pass design grips braid effectively.

It's a straightforward knot that delivers reliable 95% breaking strength on braided line — making it a practical alternative to the more complex FG Knot for lighter braid applications where a leader connection isn't required.

Best Used For

Ideal applications
  • ✓ Braided line direct to hooks
  • ✓ Braided line to lures and jigs
  • ✓ Light to medium braid applications
  • ✓ Anglers new to braid who need a reliable terminal knot
Not ideal for
  • ✗ Very heavy braid over 50 lb
  • ✗ Maximum strength applications

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these 5 steps to tie the Berkley Braid Knot. Watch the video above while following along.

Step 1: Thread through the eye

Pass 10 inches of braid through the hook eye. Double the tag end back alongside the standing line.

Step 2: Thread through the eye again

Pass the doubled tag end back through the hook eye from the opposite direction, creating a small loop.

Step 3: Wrap 8 times

Wrap the tag end (doubled section) around the standing braid 8 times, working away from the eye.

Step 4: Thread through the loop at the eye

Pass the tag end through the small loop at the hook eye.

Step 5: Wet and tighten

Wet the knot. Pull the tag end and standing line simultaneously to seat. Pull firmly — braid needs extra force to fully compress the wraps. Trim the tag end close.

Pro Tips

  • Eight wraps minimum for braid under 30 lb — use 10 for lighter braid
  • Wet heavily — braid needs good lubrication to seat without slipping
  • Pull harder than you think — the knot should compress completely
  • Works on all braid brands and weave patterns

Common Mistakes

  • Too few wraps — braid will slip
  • Not wetting before tightening
  • Pulling too gently — the knot doesn't seat fully without firm tension
  • Skipping the second thread through the eye
