About the Uni Knot

The Uni Knot (also called the Duncan Loop) is the most versatile fishing knot ever devised. Mastering a single knot gives you a terminal connection, a line-to-line join, and a loop knot all in one. Many experienced anglers use only the Uni knot system their entire fishing career.

It's especially valuable for braided line, where many other knots slip or fail. The looped-wrap design grips braid effectively, making it one of the few terminal knots that works reliably on all three line types.

Best Used For

Ideal applications
  • ✓ All line types including braid
  • ✓ Hooks, lures, and swivels
  • ✓ Line-to-line connections (double-uni)
  • ✓ Braid-to-leader joins
Not ideal for
  • ✗ Situations requiring a non-slip loop
  • ✗ Maximum strength offshore applications

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these 5 steps to tie the Uni Knot. Watch the video above while following along.

Step 1: Thread and double back

Pass 6 inches of line through the hook eye. Double the tag end back alongside the standing line, forming a loop.

Step 2: Wrap through the loop

Pass the tag end through the loop and wrap it around the doubled section six times, moving toward the hook eye.

Step 3: Tighten the wraps

Hold the wraps and pull the tag end to snug the coils together into a loose knot on the doubled line.

Step 4: Slide to the eye

Pull the standing line to slide the knot down to the hook eye. The knot slides easily while wet.

Step 5: Wet and seat firmly

Wet thoroughly, then pull the standing line hard to seat the knot tight against the eye. Trim the tag end close.

Pro Tips

  • Six wraps is standard — use more wraps for lighter line
  • The knot slides when wet, so keep it moist while positioning
  • For braid, increase to 8-10 wraps for better grip
  • For double-uni (line-to-line), tie two Uni knots facing each other then pull together

Common Mistakes

  • Not enough wraps for the line diameter
  • Letting the knot dry before sliding it to the eye
  • Pulling the tag end instead of the standing line to slide the knot
  • Uneven wraps that prevent the knot from seating smoothly
