About the Bristol Knot

The Bristol Knot (also called the No-Name Knot) is a fast and reliable braid-to-leader or loop-to-loop connection. It's considerably easier to tie than the FG Knot while still delivering excellent strength, making it a popular choice for anglers who want a reliable leader connection without the steep learning curve.

The knot works by threading the mainline or braid through a loop in the leader and wrapping back, creating a snug connection that grips well under load. It's especially popular for connecting braided line to a Bimini Twist doubled-line loop.

Best Used For

Ideal applications
  • ✓ Braid to mono or fluoro leader
  • ✓ Loop-to-loop connections
  • ✓ Quick rigging on the water
  • ✓ Medium saltwater and freshwater applications
Not ideal for
  • ✗ Very heavy big game leaders

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these 5 steps to tie the Bristol Knot. Watch the video above while following along.

Step 1: Form a leader loop

Create a loop at the end of your leader line (or use an existing Perfection Loop). Hold the loop open between your fingers.

Step 2: Pass braid through the loop

Insert the end of your braid (or doubled braid from a Bimini) through the leader loop. Pull through 12 inches.

Step 3: Wrap 5 times around the leader loop

Wrap the braid back over itself and around both strands of the leader loop 5 times, working away from the open end.

Step 4: Pass through the leader loop

Take the braid tag end and pass it back through the leader loop, entering from the same side as the original thread-through.

Step 5: Wet and tighten

Wet the knot thoroughly. Hold the leader loop strands and pull the braid standing line to seat the wraps. Pull all strands firmly to lock. Trim the tag end close.

Pro Tips

  • 5 wraps for 30-80 lb leader — use more for lighter leader
  • Keep the leader loop open and stable as you wrap
  • Wet generously — this knot seats much better when wet
  • Works well connecting to a Perfection Loop or Surgeon's Loop

Common Mistakes

  • Too few wraps for the leader diameter
  • Passing the braid back through on the wrong side
  • Tightening before wetting
  • Not pulling all strands evenly to seat
