Surgeon's Loop Knot
Surgeon's Loop Knot
A fast, strong loop knot that creates a doubled loop in seconds. Used to create loop-to-loop connections on leader butts and tippets — the quickest way to add a loop to any length of line.

About the Surgeon's Loop Knot
The Surgeon's Loop Knot creates a strong, reliable loop at the end of any line using the same principle as the Surgeon's Join Knot — a doubled overhand knot, but with the line doubled on itself instead of joining two separate pieces.
It's the fastest way to add a loop to the end of a leader, tippet, or mainline for loop-to-loop connections. While it's not as perfectly in-line as the Perfection Loop, it's much faster to tie and delivers equivalent practical strength for most applications.
Best Used For
Ideal applications
- ✓ Quick loop-to-loop leader connections
- ✓ Adding loops to leader sections in the field
- ✓ Beginner anglers needing a fast, reliable loop
Not ideal for
- ✗ Applications requiring a perfectly in-line loop (use Perfection Loop)
- ✗ Braided line
Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these 4 steps to tie the Surgeon's Loop Knot. Watch the video above while following along.
Step 1: Double the line
Fold about 6 inches of line back on itself to form a doubled loop.
Step 2: Form a loop with the doubled section
Create a loop with the doubled section of line.
Step 3: Pass through twice
Pass the doubled loop through the large loop twice (double overhand with the doubled line).
Step 4: Wet and tighten
Wet the knot. Pull the loop and both standing line strands simultaneously to seat. Trim any remaining tag end.
Pro Tips
- Two passes through the loop (double) significantly increases strength
- Pull the loop and standing line simultaneously — not just one
- Loop size is set by how much line you double over — decide before tying
Common Mistakes
- Only one pass through the loop (weaker single surgeon's loop)
- Not pulling the loop when tightening — knot seats unevenly
- Too small a doubled section — loop will be too small to be useful
